(1) Production and consumption of paper and cardboard
According to the survey data of the China Paper Association, in 2018, there were about 2,700 paper and paperboard production enterprises nationwide, and the national paper and paperboard production volume was 104.35 million tons, an increase of -6.24% over the previous year. Consumption was 104.39 million tons, an increase of -4.20% over the previous year, and the per capita annual consumption was 75 kg (1.395 billion people). From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of paper and cardboard production was 2.12%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption was 2.22%.
(2) Production and consumption of main paper and cardboard products
1. Newsprint
In 2018, the production of newsprint was 1.9 million tons, an increase of -19.15% over the previous year; the consumption was 2.37 million tons, an increase of -11.24% over the previous year. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of production is -9.78%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption is -7.13%.
2. Uncoated printing and writing
In 2018, the production of uncoated printing and writing paper was 17.5 million tons, an increase of -2.23% over the previous year; the consumption was 17.51 million tons, an increase of 0.40% over the previous year. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of production is 1.65%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption is 1.76%.
3. Coated printing paper
In 2018, the production of coated printing paper was 7.05 million tons, an increase of -7.84% over the previous year; the consumption was 6.04 million tons, an increase of -4.73% over the previous year. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of production was 1.98%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption was 3.00%.

In 2018, the production of coated paper was 6.55 million tons, an increase of -2.96% over the previous year; the consumption was 5.81 million tons, an increase of -0.68% over the previous year. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of production was 3.05%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption was 4.26%.
4. Household paper
In 2018, the production of household paper was 9.7 million tons, an increase of 1.04% over the previous year; the consumption was 9.01 million tons, an increase of 1.24% over the previous year. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of production was 5.88%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption was 6.10%.
5. Packaging paper
In 2018, the production of packaging paper was 6.9 million tons, an increase of -0.72% over the previous year; the consumption was 7.01 million tons, an increase of -0.85% over the previous year. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of production was 2.05%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption was 1.99%.
6. White cardboard
In 2018, the production volume of white paperboard was 13.35 million tons, an increase of -6.64% over the previous year; the consumption volume was 12.19 million tons, an increase of -6.16% over the previous year. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of production was 1.67%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption was 0.55%.

In 2018, the production of coated white paperboard was 12.75 million tons, an increase of -6.93% over the previous year; the consumption was 11.58 million tons, an increase of -6.46% over the previous year. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of production was 1.65%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption was 0.47%.
7. Box cardboard
In 2018, the production volume of container board was 21.45 million tons, an increase of -1.06% over the previous year; the consumption volume was 23.45 million tons, an increase of -6.57% over the previous year. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of production was 2.42%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption was 2.93%.
8. Corrugated base paper
In 2018, the production of corrugated base paper was 21.05 million tons, an increase of -9.85% over the previous year; the consumption was 22.13 million tons, an increase of -7.64% over the previous year. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of production was 2.30%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption was 2.59%.
9. Specialty paper and cardboard
In 2018, the production of specialty paper and cardboard was 3.2 million tons, an increase of 4.92% over the previous year; the consumption was 2.61 million tons, an increase of 4.82% over the previous year. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of production was 8.78%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption was 6.83%
2. Completion of economic indicators of paper and cardboard production enterprises

3. Pulp production and consumption
(1) Pulp production in 2018
According to the survey data of the China Paper Association, the total national pulp production in 2018 was 72.01 million tons, an increase of -9.41% over the previous year. Among them: 11.47 million tons of wood pulp, an increase of 9.24% over the previous year; 54.44 million tons of waste paper pulp, an increase of -13.61% over the previous year; 6.1 million tons of non-wood pulp, an increase of 2.17% over the previous year.
(2) Pulp consumption in 2018
In 2018, the country's total pulp consumption was 93.87 million tons, an increase of -6.61% over the previous year. 33.03 million tons of wood pulp, accounting for 35% of total pulp consumption, of which imported wood pulp accounts for 23% and domestic wood pulp accounting for 12%; waste paper pulp accounts for 54.74 million tons, accounting for 58% of total pulp consumption, of which imported waste paper is used for pulping It accounts for 16%, and uses domestic waste paper to make 42%; non-wood pulp accounts for 6.1 million tons, accounting for 7% of total pulp consumption.
(3) Utilization of waste paper in 2018
In 2018, the total amount of waste paper recovered in the country was 49.64 million tons, an increase of -6.07% over the previous year, the waste paper recovery rate was 48%, and the waste paper utilization rate was 64%. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of waste paper recovery was 3.39%.
4. Production and consumption of paper products
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2018, there were 4,003 paper production enterprises above designated size in the country, with a production volume of 55.78 million tons, an increase of -17.98% over the previous year; consumption of 52.73 million tons, an increase of -19.04% over the previous year; imports of 180,000 Tons, the export volume is 3.23 million tons. From 2009 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of paper product production was 3.99%, and the average annual growth rate of consumption was 3.88%.
5. Import and export of paper and cardboard, pulp, waste paper and paper products

In 2018, paper and paperboard imports were 6.22 million tons, an increase of 33.48% over the previous year; pulp imports were 24.79 million tons, an increase of 4.51% over the previous year; waste paper imports were 17.03 million tons, an increase of -33.79% over the previous year; paper products imports were 180,000 Tons, an increase of -5.26% over the previous year.
In 2018, imported paper and paperboard, pulp, waste paper and paper products totaled 48.22 million tons, an increase of -11.18% over the previous year, and the foreign exchange consumption was 30.212 billion US dollars, an increase of 15.67% over the previous year. The average price of imported paper and cardboard was US$888.99/ton, an increase of -1.36% from the average price of the previous year; the average price of imported pulp was US$795.31/ton, an increase of 22.99% from the average price of the previous year; the average price of imported waste paper was US$252.03/ Tons, an increase of 10.33% over the average price of the previous year.
(2) Exports of paper and cardboard, pulp, waste paper and paper products
In 2018, the export of paper and paperboard was 6.18 million tons, an increase of -11.59% over the previous year; the export of pulp was 99,000 tons, an increase of 1.22% over the previous year; the export of waste paper was 6,000 tons, an increase of -60.00% over the previous year; the export of paper products was 323 10,000 tons, an increase of 5.21% over the previous year.
In 2018, exports of paper and paperboard, pulp, waste paper, and paper products totaled 9,510,500 tons, an increase of -6.39% over the previous year, and foreign exchange earned US$19.269 billion, an increase of 7.20% over the previous year. The average price of exported paper and paperboard was US$1408.57/ton, an increase of 13.57% from the average price of the previous year; the average price of export paper pulp was US$1311.32/ton, an increase of -3.91% from the average price of the previous year.
(3) Import and export of main paper and cardboard products from 2009 to 2018
1. Newsprint: In 2018, imports exceeded exports, with net imports of 470,000 tons.

6. Layout and concentration of paper and cardboard production
According to the survey data of China Paper Association, in 2018, the output of paper and paperboard accounted for 74.2% of the country's paper and paperboard output in 11 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in eastern my country; 8 provinces (regions) in the central region accounted for 16.3%; in the west; The proportion of 12 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in the region accounted for 9.5%.
In 2018, the output of paper and paperboard in 17 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) of Guangdong, Shandong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Fujian, Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Chongqing, Sichuan, Guangxi, Hunan, Tianjin, Hebei, Jiangxi, Hainan and Liaoning exceeded 1 million Tons, the total output is 100.47 million tons, accounting for 96.28% of the country`s total output of paper and cardboard.
